Thanks for checking out our first installment of the Revel Woods Expert Series! Throughout this series we will be talking to experts in a multitude of fields with the goal of adding large ticket items like flooring to your design business to make your overall business more profitable.

In this episode we’re talking with Lori Miya from Miya Interiors. Lori has a powerhouse design business in Salt Lake City, UT where she specializes in full service residential design for both new builds as well as remodels.

Lori started offering flooring over 10 years ago and last year she sold over $1M in just flooring. Obviously going from $0-$1M overnight is unrealistic, but Lori gives us some tips on how to get started adding this to your revenue stream while doing largely the same things many of you are already doing.

She also discusses some of the burning issues many designers face like how to keep your clients from shopping you, and how to upsell them to higher quality, more profitable items responsibly.

I know it’s a long video so here’s the time stamps so you can jump right to the parts you like (you’re welcome):

  • 4:30 – Why get into big ticket items like flooring.
  • 7:00 – One of the biggest obstacles in sourcing flooring in her early days.
  • 11:00 Common hurdles interior designers reunite into with floor sourcing and how to overcome them.
  • 14:00 How much money has she made adding flooring to her business.
  • 16:05 Do you need to invest in a showroom in order to do this successfully?
  • 19:00 All about sampling. What you need to know to sample successfully.
  • 23:15 Working with installers and contractors.
  • 29:02 Price and quality. Where to skimp and where not to.
  • 32:15 How do you keep your clients from wandering off and changing your vision?
  • 37:15 - Large project selection order and budgeting tips

Lori was also gracious enough to provide her contact information if any of you out there are interested in growing your business this way and want some more guidance. Please email her at miyainteriors@gmail.com
