At one time the city of New Orleans, Louisiana had more local markets than any other US city. When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the markets were wiped out but local residents determined that its presence was vital to the rebuilding of the city. In 2006 the Crescent City Market was reopened and provided the still-rebuilding city with fresh food - a service it still provides today.
