Opened in 1832 as a precaution in case of war in the United States, the Rideau Canal is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America. In the winter, the section of the canal passing through Ottawa is the largest and second longest ice skating rink in the world with the surface area of 90 olympic ice hockey rinks.
